About Us

The first black Board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Clarence Greene, graduated from Howard University in 1936 and trained in neurosurgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute, to pursue his calling without fear of prejudice. Then as now, Howard University College of Medicine does not have a home neurosurgery program, but it boasts a dedicated core of aspiring neurosurgeons. The HUCM AANS Student Chapter was proposed by Dr. Deja Rush and Dr. Remi Wilson in 2019, who sought a place to call home in the realm of surgery, and found neurosurgery with the guidance of our sponsor, Dr. Damirez Fossett. In the words of Dr. Rush, "I wanted to make it so that anyone coming behind me could find us, find a family, and a field they were passionate about." It was under her presidency that we held our first Annual Neuroscience Research Symposium, and the bar is always set higher for what we will do next.
